Apocalyptic Revelations
Three united, three scattered across the barren battlefield. Soon to find each other and become whole.
Sebastian’s eyes opened, focusing in on the now familiar landscape. He looked over to where the fire was, Josh was still asleep next to it. “It’s a wonder his hair didn’t catch on fire…” he thought. Then, looking up, he saw Rachel running towards him.
“YOU’RE AWAKE!” she exclaimed.
“… Rachel, what’re you doing? I just got up…”
“Sorry, I get hyper when I’m bored! Do you know you play guitar in your sleep?”
“… what?...” he yawned.
“Yeah, you twitch your fingers like you’re playing a solo or something!”
“You mean you watched me sleeping?”
“Yeah, what else am I supposed to do?”
“I dunno…” he laughed, “What time is it?”
She looked at her watch, “Two thirty. Do you usually wake up in time for dinner?”
“Wow, I guess we should wake up Josh.”
He walked over to Josh’s “bed”.
“Get up, lazy.”
“Mrrmph…” he mumbled sleepily.
“I said get up.”
“Idonwanna…”
“GET UP!!!”
“Fine, fine… I’ll do it later” he rolled over and fell back asleep.
“Josh! I’ve got food!”
“Really?! It’s mine I found it!” he instantly got up and looked around frantically.
“Josh, you’re too easy!”
“*sigh*, no food eh?” Josh looked disappointed, “Oh well. Where are we going today?”
“Well, seeing as we have no maps or compasses, I’d say we head in the general direction of forward.”
“Sounds good!”
“But Josh…”
“Yeah”
“Before we go, put your pants on.”
“Can do!”
They told Rachel they were leaving. Where they were going they had no idea, but what else do you do when you’re the last humans on Earth?
As they were walking they noticed the sky had turned a miraculous shade of white. Up until now it had been an ominous gray sheet. “Perhaps an omen of good fortune?” Sebastian thought. And then, something none of them expected. In the middle of an open field, they saw something about seven feet tall but no more than seven inches wide.
“What’s that?” Rachel asked.
“Hrm, dunno. Let’s go see!” said Josh.
“Hold on, we have no idea what it is. Let’s not forget that the world ended! Doesn’t it seem a bit strange?” wondered Rachel.
Sebastian chimed in, “Well, we don’t know what it is, but that doesn’t make it bad. Besides, I’ve been bored for a while now and its about time something actually happened.”
As they ran towards it they noticed that it was a brilliant shade of green.
“IS THAT A TREE?!” yelled Sebastian.
“FOOD!!!” screamed Josh.
It was indeed a tree. They all circled it and stared in amazement. It was very scrawny, but still healthy. Hangings from its limbs were something that looked like a cross between a pear and a banana.
“Rachel! Josh! I think we can eat… these?” he turned to see them both already eating the strange fruit.
“Oh fine! No use waiting for me, eh?”
But he didn’t expect them to respond. Josh was already starting in on his second helping and Rachel was almost done with hers. Sebastian hesitantly reached out and took one for himself. He looked at it for a bit wondering if there was any special way you were supposed to eat it. But his hunger had been plaguing him for the past two days and if there was food, each second spent not eating it was one too many. As he bit into the odd fruit he experienced a multitude of flavors that all blended together to make one. It was like nothing he’d ever tasted. Not sweet, or spicy, or sour, but it was still the most delicious thing he had eaten his entire life. As he looked back down to take another bite he opened his eyes to look at the inside of the fruit. He almost fell down when he saw it. It was a colour that he’d never seen before. I’d describe it to you if I could but that would be impossible. Its not a shade of red, blue, or yellow. It was something completely new. The others saw his amazement and looked down at their own fruits. Josh stared deep into the new colour while Rachel jumped back in amazement. They didn’t know what to think. It was an amazing colour, Sebastian wished his family could’ve seen this. Josh decided that the colour had become boring and started to eat again.
“Wow…” whispered Rachel.
“Yeah, its beautiful” said Sebastian.
“This tree’s amazing”
“You think we should live here now?” he asked
“I don’t know, what do you think Josh?”
But Josh was preoccupied with something else. He was starring at the ground beneath the tree.
“Guys, get over here and look at this…”
They all gathered around the base of the tree. Underneath its branches in the soil were the words “Eat and stay strong, many troubles will soon find you”.
“How’d that get there?” asked Sebastian.
“I don’t know, I don’t remember seeing it.” Said Rachel.
But before they could carry out the rest of the investigation, a wind blew for the first time and swept away the mysterious writing.
“Ooookay?...” murmured Josh.
“What should we do about this?” Racehl asked as she turned towards Sebastian.
But he was looking towards where the wind had blown to. And with the voice of a leader he called out, “Let’s go.”
Josh quickly gathered up some fruit to take with him. Rachel asked what made him so sure they should leave the tree.
“I’m not sure, it just seems like we should follow it.”
“Follow what?”
“Nevermind, It doesn’t really matter yet.”
“… okay, if you say so…”
As He watched from above, He smiled. “They might just make it after all.”
